Neighborhood history
Roots run deep
The North Hills neighborhood grew up alongside North Hills shopping center, which opened in 1960 as a strip center and became Raleigh's first enclosed mall in 1967. Recent sales show the original homes were built from 1960 into the early 1970s, mostly brick ranches and split-levels on wooded third-acre lots. Many streets are named for North Carolina counties, including Currituck, Catawba, Yadkin, Rowan, Tyrrell, Burke, Sampson and Pamlico.
In 2001, Kane Realty bought the aging mall and redeveloped it as a walkable mixed-use district. The new North Hills opened in 2004 and has grown into what's now called Midtown Raleigh.
As Midtown has grown, the neighborhood has become one of the most active teardown markets in Raleigh. Original ranches still sell in the $500Ks to $900Ks, while new custom homes regularly sell for $2M to $3.5M. Ten of the 11 current listings are new construction.
