Neighborhood history
Roots run deep
Budleigh's name echoes East Budleigh in Devon, England, the parish where Sir Walter Raleigh was born, at a farmhouse called Hayes Barton (which gave nearby Hayes Barton its name). The English theme carries through the street names: Dover, Eton, Yarmouth, Canterbury, Cambridge, Chesterfield and Mayfair.
A state historic preservation survey identifies Budleigh as one of the "sparsely populated neighborhoods" where larger, FHA-promoted "minimal traditional" houses went up quickly in the late 1930s, with more housing following after World War II. The Budleigh Service Station (c. late 1920s) still stands at Oberlin and Fairview Roads. Recent sales show original homes built from 1930 through the late 1950s.
Today Budleigh is one of the most active areas inside the Beltline for new custom construction, including the Budleigh East enclave of new homes on Marchmont Street.
