Roots run deep

Drewry Hills was built out starting in the mid-1950s, with recent sales showing original homes from 1956 into the 1970s. Its streets are named for British poets: Chaucer, Keats, Coleridge, Kipling, Marlowe, Milton, Landor and Drummond.

Much of the original building is tied to John C. Williams, who started building homes here in 1954 and became known for solid, well-crafted brick houses. One example is 3517 Chaucer Place, which he built in 1967.

Over the past 20 years, Drewry Hills has become one of Raleigh's top addresses for new estate homes. Some of the area's best-known builders and designers have worked here, and recent sales range from about $600K for an original ranch to nearly $6M for new construction.
