Neighborhood history
Roots run deep
North Ridge grew up around North Ridge Country Club, whose first course, The Lakes, opened in 1967. A second 18-hole course, The Oaks, followed in 1972. Both were designed by George Cobb and Gene Hamm. Homes were built along the fairways, woods and lakes from the late 1960s on, and building continued through the 1980s, '90s and 2000s.
The early homes are mostly brick ranches, split-levels and traditional two-stories on wooded half-acre lots. Later sections added larger custom homes and some townhome pockets.
Today North Ridge is one of Raleigh's most active areas for luxury teardowns and rebuilds. Original homes on good lots are being replaced with new custom construction, and most of the current listings are new builds. That gives the neighborhood a wide price range, from original homes in the $400Ks–$800Ks to new construction well into the millions.
